The compiling of professional biographies is more usual nowadays, because the employers don’t have time to read these documents for all the candidates. Compiling a personal biography is the most important document you have ever written. If you want to have a successful biography, you should follow these steps:
- Identify your goal
Why are you writing your biography? Who will read it? Take your time to think who will read it and what you want the audience to know about you.
- The perspective of third person
Your biography must sound like it is written in an objective way, not from you. You had the chance while reading a book, to read the author’s biography. That is compiled from the author himself, who uses the perspective of third person e.g. (It doesn’t say ‘I was born’ but ‘xx was born’). So, instead of writing “I know three foreign languages, you should write “xx knows three foreign languages” (Hence, refer yourself with name and surname).
- Long and short biographies
Depending on your goal, you need a long and short biography. It is preferable to have a few versions of biographies.
- Start with your name
From the beginning of your biography, it is advised to start with your name in order that the reader knows what he is reading.
- List your successes
Just like CV, list your profession and the successes you have achieved. The reader should feel curious to continue reading your biography.
- Put some personal point of views
Although your biography is a personal document, you can organize a small part of it by adding some personal things with a sense of humor. You can quote that you have a good knowledge on wines and know the best brands.
- Contact details
Put your contact details, in a correct way. Nowadays, it is preferred to open a LinkedIn profile, to have a high educational degree, research / scientific works or your SlideShare profile.
- Read and control
After you finish your biography, it is advised to read in a critical way and examine every detail. Look out the punctuation!
